January Reflections: Fun

I grew up on the West Coast and saw the ocean almost every day. Whether it was driving to college in Seattle, or looking out my parent's kitchen window. The ocean was part of life.

Oh, how I loved it! So peaceful and serene...so uplifting and exhilarating.

After I got married, God directed our paths away from the shore, via the United States Army, and moved us inland to reside in various landlocked states. We lived quite happily; content and thankful for dry land too. Then, this summer, we were transferred back to the coast. The East Coast this time, but still the coast. And the ocean lover in me jumped for joy.

I say all this in order to share some of the best "fun" memories of the year (after being prompted by Corrin at The Glorious Impossible); memories of visiting the beach and feeling sand beneath my toes.

Though I spent 20 something years in the Pacific Northwest and that area will always hold a special place in my heart, let me tell you: rocky, stony covered beaches are SO OLD. We have sand out here! Sand, people!! Real sand! Real slip-between-my-toes, fit-into-every-crevice, give-me-a-natural-pedicure sand. Beautiful. Glorious. Sand.

To save face, the beaches out here are really just different. Not more beautiful or peaceful, just different, each holding a loveliness all of it's own.

It's especially fun to think of those days at beach, when the weather is below freezing and there is still snow on the ground. I could go for a little sun and sand right now.

Instead I'll go enjoy an unmentionable cocktail with a beachy theme.

Oh Kathryn don't the places we grew up with always feel special to us? I, however, am a little rattled by the big big ocean. Being a wide open spaces kind of girl large amounts of water worry me. Flat and dry make me feel at home! I am glad that you are near the ocean again.

can you fix one of those cocktails for me, too? :)

You take great pictures! (I especially liked the ones on the post with the self-timer :)

And I'm so gonna steal your idea of picturing your books-to-read for the month.

thanks for your kind remarks to me (and Ann) on my blog.

I've also experienced both beaches (sandy and rocky) and as you said, they both have their own special things about them. I grew up with the Indiana Dunes being the closest beach and some day you'll have to experience those as well. Dunes that you can run down and they are so steep you fall at least once and think you are going to keep on rolling and rolling. Then I've also experienced the gulf of Mexico beaches as well...beautiful white sand. All the beaches have amazing qualities and I would take any one of them at this very moment as long as the sun was shining....

The beach is one of my favorite places to be too. How I would love to feel the sand between my toes right now....

The beach sounds great right now to me too! Living in NYC, we have a lot of cold months! I don't mind it on the whole but sometimes I would love some real warmth!:)

Thanks for your comment on my blog the other day. And in answer to your question, my husband and I do do devotions every morning together...it is something I am so thankful for and would highly recommend it to anyone who is thinking about doing devotions with their spouse!:)

Oh I am totally laughing out loud about your unmentionable cocktail! And you know I can SO relate to you on this post. I've been to many many beaches in my life and I think that the Florida Panhandle is the most beautiful by far. But I still love them all.
